POND WORK
Our school pond is nearing completion! It has taken some months in the planning and preparation stage but is now beginning to take shape. We are looking for a few volunteers to help this Saturday morning (March 10th - any time from 9am onwards) with lifting and laying the paving slabs alongside one or two other jobs. If you are feeling fit and are able to help we would greatly appreciate it! Just come through the carpark at the rear of the school and follow the directions. Many thanks
NEW RECYCLING POINT
We have signed up with a company called Support Your School who provide a mobile phone and printer cartridge recycling service. The scheme is free and has a zero landfill policy. The school will receive £1 for each laser or inkjet cartridge and up to £150 for mobile phones received (however this can vary depending on the condition so please treat all items with care to maximise the money earned). As well as the obvious environmental advantages, on average, schools earn £500 a year from the products they send for recycling.
There are two cardboard bins inside the main entrance door for the items. When discarding mobile phones, all that is required is the handset and battery, not the SIM card or battery charger. All printer cartridges are accepted, however EPSON cartridges will not receive a cash return but will be recycled rather than sent to landfill. Just place the items in one of the bags provided and drop them in the box.
There is a full list of the items that can be recycled on the website as well as further information about the service. If interested go to http://www.supportyourschool.co.uk/, it is a really user friendly website.
Our Climate Change Family Learning course is being run by Jennifer Jobson of Groundworks and will be starting after school on Wednesday 22nd June for four weeks. There are still a small number of places available if you would be interested. Please let me know if that is you!
Our Green Team is working hard to help develop the school’s environmentally friendly approach. Children from the current Year 3, 4, and 5 groups assist Mr Digby in jobs around school, such as composting fruit waste, helping to take meter readings and litter patrols around the grounds. Added to this, a small group of parents have been meeting over the past year to help organise events, raise awareness and develop an action plan for the school. Our action plan can be viewed online and the targets came as a result of the environmental review that Year 6 children completed in the autumn of 2010.
